And remember to tune in next week, my spooklings, for The Swirly Girly Show! It’s my first installment of this showcase of all women artists and woman-fronted bands! (Not like I have a problem with playing women artists, in general, but a solid all-female (or mostly female) showcase seemed like a great idea (even if it’s a gay man doing it). 🙂

Sorry if you were expecting more 1960s and ’70s stuff, I was pretty m,uch playing whatever the hell I was in the mood for this week, and I’m really glad that everything went right this week!

Unfortunately, I realised that a lot of my music (The Cure, Nephilim, The Cramps…) is on CD and not yet ripped into my machine, so while I’m ripping a lot of my female-fronted stuff for The Swirly Girly Show on the 19th, I’m also going to rip a lot of my other stuff i just kind of… I dunno, my only explanation is that left to my own devices, I’m a lazy man.

WCBN’s loss = WFKU’s gain: The Graveyard Shift is now Catacombs & Nursery Bones

For those who have not been watching the DJ McSpookypants FaceBook page, in a nutshell, due to office politics, I am no longer DJing at WCBN, but that’s all I’m going to say about it publicly, as I’m not entirely finished with that situation and am trying to be professional.

But what does this mean? It means I’m now DJing at WFKU.org, which consistently has between three and five times the WCBN streaming listeners during any time slot (I’ve been a streamer of both stations, and a WCBN DJ long enough to make that judgement call) and gives DJs a percentage of donations the station receives during their shows and a percentage of advertising revenues brought in on a DJs referral (‘CBN’s DJs are all volunteers). Plus I get to DJ in my skivvies, if I feel like it. It’s also outside FCC restrictions, so it doesn’t matter my time slot, I can play whatever I feel like, and I don’t have the pressures to limit the numbers of “fucks” I let fly in the music I play outside the “safe harbour” times.

wfku003

I’m on 9pm to Midnight, Eastern, and the show is “Catacombs & Nursery Bones” cos I’m no longer on any kind of “graveyard shift” in the Western Hemisphere, and I’ve got a slew of bits n’ bobs, oddities, and gothic miscellanea to play.

I’ve also got the freedom to go forward, right off the bat, with a monthly showcase feature I’d hoped to implement at WCBN that I’m calling “The Swirly Girly Show”, that will feature three hours of the best (and sometimes the worst, cos that’s how I roll) of DFAB and women artists (some trans) and DFAB/woman-fronted bands. Don’t ask me why, but I tended to eschew women artists pre-transition, but now I really love their work.

wfku004

So feel free to tune in to WFKU.org (especially when I’m on), donate to the station and click to purchase the music you love, and you’ll be supporting the station itself, the musicians creating it, and the DJs who work hard to bring it to you. Listen from the website or the mobile app.

Also feel free to donate to my Patreon funding, if you’d rather support me directly (half of it is probably going to buy music and band merch, anyway).

Also looking forward to the Violet Void concert in Toledo, tomorrow:

I will be at one of the vendor tables with buttons *and* paintings! Taking all major credit cards via the Sell On Etsy reader, or a small discount for cash buyers.

And remember, a week from today is the monthly Gothic Gatherings game night! Got a load of board and card games for us all to play, so I hope to see you there!

——–

It was a great first fundraiser shift for The Graveyard Shit! As you can see, I expanded the showcasing from my original plan which, comsidering the obligations I have on the air to events info to read, actually this way worked out a lot better.

We even got a few donations, and I got to give away The Munsters lunchbox, with I will fill with stuff and post out at the end of the month! Big thanks to local listener Evan, who won the lunchbox and picked himself up a Tooth Balloons t-shirt in the process! 🙂

I also got news this week at the fundraising phones on who I have to get in touch with about officially naming my show and linking to this blog.

Next week’s show: I’ll get to the requests that did not fit this week’s showcase, start the show with more readings of Edgar Allen Poe, and who knows what else? Also looking forward to seeing a bunch of people and definitely vending at the Violet Void concert in Toledo on the 21st –come out and buy buttons (pins only, magnets need the glue to set for 12 hours), maybe grab one of my paintings for sale, rock out to some tunes, and meet me, DJ McSpookypants!

Cross your fingers for the Graveyard Shift (“freeform with Ruadhan”) segment of the WCBN-FM donation drive!

I’ve found my old vintage 1990s MUNSTERS lunchbox!

You remember their address, 1313 Mockingbird Lane &mash; and to the donor who can bring the WCBN donations to my show up to 13 x $13 ($169 total –or more, but that’s my goal) I will personally send you The Munsters‘ lunchbox! That means you can donate that much at the beginning of the show (and also claim hell of official WCBN swag!), or wait until I announce that we’ve got $168 and get it for only a $1 donation! (Great game plan for people who can’t afford a donation for any of the sweet official WCBN swag.)

[I cannot do this for cash or cheque donors, cos in theory the station won’t get it for weeks, and if you don’t follow through, you’ve screwed my station and made a fool of me.]

So we’re doing a triple showcase of Claudia Brucken, Andi Sexgang, and Rozz Williams, and a Munsters lunchbox give-away! Tune in this Thursday night, Midnight to 3am (ESP/GMT-0500), donate all of your delicious monies to WCBN-FM and get a chance to win a Munsters lunchbox!

I will send the lunchbox out at the end of the month, and if you’re in a band or an A2/Ypsi local business, feel free to give me stickers, sample music, etc…, to fill the lunchbox with! I’ve got a few things already loaded inside it!

Donate to WCBN-FM!

It’s fundraiser week here at WCBN-FM in Ann Arbor, MI! While we get some not-insignificant support from the University of Michigan, we still need the annual fundraiser to make ends meet, and so that’s where we need listener support, or we’re in danger of the university selling the license and then I won’t be around to have the Graveyard Shift get it’s name officially and we’ll be sad.

But you can help WCBN-FM stay on the air for another year! You can call WCBN-FM at 734-763-3500 (or donate online, if you really have to), donate ANY amount to my show, and I will squeeze in a request either in-between songs in my three artist showcase this Thursday or next Thursday (but if your request in any way involves Claudia Brucken, Andi Sexgang, or Rozz Wlliams, I will definitely play it this Thursday night!), or donate $25 and get song request AND a brandy snifter and we can drink cherry juice from them at the Gothic Gatherings game night as we play Chez Goth or Gloom, or donate $40 and get a song request AND grab yourself one of the creepy-cute “Tooth Balloons” t-shirts! Or grab one of the other premium gifts seen here!

It’s all for a good cause, and I think you can get tax deduction info for next year, if necessary.

ETA: If you call WCBN to donate to my show off-schedule, say it’s for “freeform with Ruadhan” — it’s not *officially* “The Graveyard Shift” until at least next semester. If you don’t know how to pronounce that, just say R, half the other DJs don’t know how it’s pronounced, either.

T’was an excellent night DJing at WCBN-FM! I almost wish I was able to slide in some more experimental stuff, though, especially after the recent passing of Ian Allen of Negativland, but it was a pre-Game Night set, so this works, too (plus, if Mirabilis doesn’t count as enough of Classical music to technically qualify as a Freeform set, then who knows?)

Hope to see a bunch of people tonight at Get Your Game On in downtown Ann Arbor, MI, for the monthly game night! Last I checked, we’re expecting the biggest turn-out, ever, so I’m going to pop in a little early (assuming I can put these packages together in plenty of time), and see about the room situation, as where we’re currently gaming can *maybe* comfortably sit six, and my last head count was seven, including RSVPs via FB, via IM, and “plus ones”, and I can’t remember if I’ve counted myself in that.

DJ McSpookypants urges you to help others!

My friend Wendy, currently in Lansing but with strong ties to the goth community all over Central and Southeastern Michigan and Ontario since the mid-1990s, is at a great risk of losing literally ALL her worldly possessions in a storage unit. As she states in the GiveForward page she’s created, she has very recently (like, in the last week!) secured a job, but the unit people can’t wait for her first paycheque. Everything she owns, save a few outfits and whatever she keeps in her car, at the small apartment shared with her boyfriend, and on her person, is at risk of being lost to her forever: Family photos, baby books (her own and her childdren’s), and irreplaceable mementos from her father who died over thirty years ago. This that cannot be replaced in any meaningful way.

The minimum donation that GiveForward can accept is $5, which I myself cannot give until (at least) this weekend, but to help sweeten the deal, I’m making this offer:

For those unaware, I sell buttons on Etsy, pins, mostly, but I’ve recently decided to add the option of making them magnets, instead. From now until the 31st, for every sale in my shop of buttons with the “goth” or “gothic” tags (pins or magnets!), I will add an additional 50¢ to the $5 I’m already going to donate to Wendy’s fundraiser! For every custom bulk order, I will donate an additional $5.

Wendy herself has also offered to do up custom astrology charts for people who donate! (She gave me permission to send people to contact her on FaceBook for more info on that.)

If you cannot donate (or buy my buttons), please share this post to your own blog, or FaceBook, or email it to friends who you think would love to help. Time is of the essence!
